Stove & Range Repair

Slide-in, freestanding, dual-fuel, and pro-style range repair. Gas-line work coordinated with licensed installers.

Line illustration of a stove

Slide-in, freestanding, dual-fuel, and pro-style ranges combine a stovetop and an oven in one appliance — so a single power or gas failure can take both out at once. We service every major brand, from mainstream Whirlpool and Samsung models to pro-style ranges from Wolf and Thermador. Gas-line work involves gas-licensed technicians; appliance-side work is everything else.

01 · How it works

How a stove works

A range combines two cooking systems sharing a single appliance shell: the stovetop (burners on top — electric coil, gas, or induction depending on the model) and the oven (the enclosed cooking compartment below). They share the appliance's electrical or gas supply but mostly operate independently — one can fail while the other works.

02 · Common problems

What we typically fix

  1. 01

    Burner won't ignite (gas)

Gas burners light when a spark module fires at the same time the gas valve opens. If you hear clicking but no flame, either the gas isn't flowing (clogged orifice, closed shutoff) or the spark module is firing but the burner cap is misaligned or wet. If you hear no clicking, the spark module or the switch in the knob has failed.

  2. 02

    Weak or yellow flame (gas)

A yellow or weak flame means incomplete combustion — usually a partially clogged burner orifice (food spillage carbonized in the gas port). Clean the burner caps and ports first. If still weak, the gas regulator may need adjusting — that's our work.

  3. 03

Oven and stovetop both not working

Points to a power or gas supply problem rather than an appliance failure. For electric ranges, check both breakers (240V dual circuit). For gas, check the gas shutoff to the appliance. If both are correct, the appliance's main control board or terminal has failed.

  4. 04

    Knob damage

Range knobs go through more wear than any other appliance control. Cracked plastic, missing detents, or knobs that spin freely without controlling the burner are common. Replacement is straightforward; sometimes the switch behind the knob has also worn out and needs replacing too.

  5. 05

    Bake element burnout (electric)

On electric ovens, the bake element on the bottom is the most likely heating element to fail. You'll see visible damage — blistering, broken section, or a bright glow at one spot when energized. Replacement is routine.

03 · Types

Types of stoves we service

Different builds fail in different ways. Here's what we see most often across each type.

Slide-in range

Designed to sit flush against the countertop with no exposed sides. Most popular configuration in current kitchens. Service requires careful removal to avoid scratching counters.

Freestanding range

Traditional design with finished sides — the range can stand alone or sit between cabinets. Simpler to pull for service than slide-ins. The most common configuration in older homes.

Dual-fuel

Gas cooktop paired with electric oven (or rarely the reverse). Combines the responsiveness of gas burners with the consistency of electric baking. More electrical components than pure gas, more service points.

Pro-style 30–48 inch

Heavy-duty residential ranges modeled on commercial designs. Brands: Wolf, Thermador, Viking, BlueStar. Heavier construction, longer-lasting components, but parts can be specialty-order. We service the full lineup.

04 · Warning signs

Signs your stove needs repair

  • Burner clicks repeatedly but doesn't light
  • Strong gas smell when the range is off (immediate emergency)
  • Stovetop works but oven doesn't (or vice versa)
  • Knobs that turn loosely without controlling the burner
  • Visibly damaged or burned-through bake element
  • Smoke from a burner or oven that isn't from food
  • Touch panel intermittent on electronic models

Try these before booking

Quick checks that resolve a meaningful share of stove calls without a tech visit.

  1. 01

Clean the burner caps and ports (gas)

Pull each burner cap off and inspect the ports for clogs. A toothpick or thin wire clears most food debris. Wipe down the ignition area — a wet ignitor won't spark.

  2. 02

    Check the breakers (electric)

Electric ranges use a 240V circuit with two breakers. Sometimes only one trips — you'll get partial function. Check both breakers and reset both.

  3. 03

    Verify the gas supply (gas)

Confirm the gas shutoff to the range is fully open. If you have other gas appliances, verify they work — that confirms gas is reaching the house.

  4. 04

Don't lift the cooktop unless you know what you're doing

On gas ranges, the cooktop hinges up for cleaning access. We've seen many DIY attempts damage the gas line connections — call us before lifting if you're not sure.

Before our visit

What to do

  • Clean grease off the burners and around the controls
  • Identify whether your range is gas, electric, or dual-fuel
  • Locate the gas shutoff (if gas) or the breaker panel (if electric)
  • Have the model number ready (under the storage drawer or behind the kick panel)

Finding the model number

Model number is on a sticker under the storage drawer (lift the drawer out), behind the kick panel at the bottom, or on the side of the range when pulled out. A photo works.

Safety

If you smell gas, leave the home immediately, call your gas utility's emergency line from outside, and do not operate any electrical switch or appliance. Gas range work is performed by gas-licensed technicians. We coordinate gas-line work (anything supply-side rather than appliance-side) with licensed installers.

10 · FAQ

Common questions

Specific to stove repair.

Why does my burner click repeatedly but not light?
The spark module is firing but the gas isn't lighting. Most common cause: wet or misaligned burner cap (especially after cleaning). Lift the cap, dry it, reseat it. If still clicking, the cap or burner head may need replacing.
How hot does the outside of the range get? Is that normal?
Outside surfaces (sides and front) shouldn't get too hot to touch briefly — warm yes, but not actively hot. If you can't keep your hand on the side panel, the oven insulation may be failing or the door seal isn't sealing. Both are service items.
When should I retire my range?
If a single repair is over half the cost of a comparable new range, it's usually worth replacing. We quote both options. Pro-style ranges often have a 20+ year lifespan and are worth fixing further into life than mainstream ranges.
Why is one burner sparking constantly even when off?
Stuck spark module or a switch that hasn't fully released. Turn off the breaker or unplug at the wall (gas ranges use 120V electrical power for ignition even though heat is gas) and call us — continuous sparking can damage the module.
Why does my oven smell like gas even when it's off?
Not normal. Leave the home, call your gas utility's emergency line from outside. Do not operate any switch or appliance. After they've cleared it, call us — there may be a valve issue that needs to be addressed.
Can I convert my gas range from natural gas to propane?
Yes for most models — requires a conversion kit (orifices, regulators) and a gas-licensed technician to install. We can do this. Call to discuss the specific model.
How do I clean burned-on food off the burners?
Pull the burner caps and grates and soak them in hot soapy water with a degreaser. For the burner heads underneath, a soft brush and gentle prying with a toothpick clears clogged ports. Don't use abrasive pads — they damage the porcelain.
Why does my electric range coil glow only in spots?
The heating coil has burned out in places. Coils are routine replacements. Don't continue using a partially-burned coil; the uneven heating stresses the receptacle below.
Should I pre-heat the oven?
For baking yes (recipes assume preheated). For roasting or anything cooked at high temperature for a long time, not strictly necessary but recommended for consistency. Modern ovens reach temperature in 8–15 minutes depending on size.
Do you service pro-style ranges like Wolf and Thermador?
Yes — the full lineup. Pro-style parts can be specialty-order; we'll quote in writing before any work starts.

Worth knowing

How long stoves last

13–15 years for mainstream ranges; pro-style ranges (Wolf, Thermador, Viking, BlueStar) often last 20+ years with maintenance. Igniters, switches, knobs, and bake elements are the most common parts to fail across all types.

What we don't service
